Industrial Designs

Safeguard the visual design of your product and preserve its uniqueness.

What is an Industrial Design?

An Industrial Design refers to the aesthetic or ornamental aspects of a product — the shape, configuration, pattern, or color that gives your product a unique appearance. It does not cover the product’s technical or functional features.

Whether you’ve designed a unique bottle, piece of furniture, packaging, or fashion item — registering your industrial design gives you the legal right to prevent others from replicating your work for up to 15 years (initially 5 years, renewable in two 5-year periods).

Key Benefits of Registering Your Industrial Design:

Exclusive Rights: Only you can use, sell, or license the design.

Brand Value: Enhance the commercial appeal and marketability of your product.

Legal Protection: Stop unauthorized copying or imitation.

Monetization Opportunities: License or sell your design to generate income.

Step-by-Step Industrial Design Application Process

Step 1: Ensure Your Design is Eligible

Confirm that your design is new, original, and not previously disclosed to the public.

Step 2: Prepare Your Application:

Your application should include:

  •  A completed request form (Form No. 1)
  • A representation of the design (drawings or photographs)
  • An indication of the kind of product to which the design applies
  • The prescribed application fee

Step 3: Submit the Application

Submit your application in person or online to the Intellectual Property Office. Ensure that all required documents are signed and complete.

Step 4: Formal Examination & Filing Date

The IPO will review your application for completeness and assign a filing date if all requirements are met.

Step 5: Publication

Your registered design is published in the IP Office Journal, making it visible to the public.

Step 6: Certificate of Registration

Once approved, you’ll receive a Certificate of Registration, granting you exclusive rights for the initial 5-year term.

Step 7: Renewal

You can renew your design twice, for 5 years each time — up to a maximum of 15 years.
